Flash Card Stitching Contest Entry
This is my entry for the &Stitches Back to School Stitching Competition. My flash card is for the Japanese character ひ (Hi). The Japanese word ひつじ (Hitsuji) means sheep. Since I am interested in Japanese language and culture and love sheep and lambs, it was a natural choice for my flash card. This was stitched on a Flour Sack Towel and the finished size is 3 x 5 inches. It is my own design.
Stitches used in this flash card:
- Backstitch
- Chain stitch
- French knot – I had a ton of fun crafting french knots for this project. I varied the size and tension to make the sheep look fluffy and not uniform.

Pasta Alla Norma Lunch
This was an tasty dinner turned into delicious leftovers for lunch. I love eggplant but my husband doesn’t so I had this for dinner with my parents when he was working. I put the fruit in a silicone cup so it would be easy to heat up this lunch in a microwave. I like the texture of fresh mozzarella melted but I know that some people don’t.
Container: EasyLunchBoxes
Pasta: Spaghetti Alla Norma – I followed the recipe for this one except that I used Angel Hair pasta. This is a family favorite that I have made many times over the years.
Fruit: Raspberries
Bread: Dense white bread (a gift from my parents neighbors)
Peace for Niece
I made this lunch for my now 9 year old niece. It is her birthday today! This was a lunch at home and she ate the pasta warm.
Container: EasyLunchBoxes
Peace Pasta: Annie’s Homegrown Organic Peace Pasta with Parmesan, peace symbol (cucumber and peel)
Vegetable: Sliced tomato and cucumber E (for the first letter in her name)
Fruit: Raspberries with some blueberries
Vegetable Biryani Lunch
I love having leftovers for lunch! This dish made a pleasant dinner with my parents and a tasteful lunch for me.

Dairy: Cottage cheese with cinnamon

Celebrate the Harvest Vegetarian Dinner
Recently in my area I have seen advertisements for community Celebrate the Harvest dinners. They all feature meat as the main part of the meal. When I think of harvest I think of fruit and vegetables. I decided to have a Vegetarian Celebrate the Harvest Dinner. My husband is very busy this time of year (harvest) so I prepared and ate this dinner with my parents.
This menu is a combination of easy and quite a bit of effort. The place cards were very easy – card stock with Chinese lanterns. The dessert was easy since I used puffed pastry and I enhanced vanilla ice cream instead of making my own pumpkin ice cream from scratch. I made the soup the night before. The biggest effort of this meal was the homemade ravioli. I started with a Hubbard squash and cooked it down the night before. I also made my own ravioli dough. (see menu and recipes below)
Menu
- Leaf Lettuce Salad with Apples, New York Cheddar Cheese, and Grape Vinaigrette – I did not like the Roasted Grape Vinaigrette recipe I used because of the garlic so I will not share the recipe. It tasted more of garlic than grape.
- French Potage with Pistou
- Hubbard Squash Ravioli in Apple Cider Reduction – I used Hubbarb Squash instead of butternut, used this ravioli dough instead of gyoza wrappers, I would not use the parsley again, and used a cider reduction instead of adding broth. I had shaved Parmesan to use as garnish but in the heat of the moment I forgot to use it.
- Apple Tart with Pumpkin Ice Cream – I used this recipe for the apple tart but I made mine smaller and did not look at the photo when placing my apples so mine is not as cute. For the Pumpkin Ice Cream I took 28 oz of softened Haagen Daas Vanilla Ice Cream and added 1/2 cup canned pumpkin, 1/4 tsp ground ginger, 3/4 tsp ground cinnamon, 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg. It was delicious!

Maine Vacation Lunch
The last weekend in September I went with my parents to Maine for the weekend. We had wonderful weather! My parents like eating fish while in Maine. As a vegetarian that is not my interest but I love walking the beach. My parents have a cooler that plugs into the car and keeps food very cold without ice. We had a refrigerator in our hotel room. I made some food for myself before leaving on our little trip. Of course I used my EasyLunchboxes.
These photos were taken during low tide right before I ate lunch. We stayed at a hotel on the beach between Pine Point and the town of Old Orchard Beach. It is a wonderful beach for walking!
Container: EasyLunchBoxes
Orzo Pasta Salad: Orzo, black olives cut in half, cherry tomatoes cut in half, feta cheese, olive oil, Dijon mustard, salt and pepper
Fruit: Raspberries
Cauliflower Salad: I used this recipe but I left out the onion and dill. I used regular mayonnaise.
Turn That Frown Upside Down
Today is World Smile Day. When I read about this day I immediately thought about a smile toast stamp that I had not yet used. I think that my vegetable smile may look a little creepy. This was an easy lunch to make.

Middle Tier: Red grapes and green bell pepper

Vegetable: Sugar snap peas
Crackers: Nabisco Premium Rounds Saltine crackers
Soccer Ball: Cheddar cheese with food marker details
The Colors of Autumn Bento Lunches
To celebrate the season of fall, I made these three leaf themed bentos for myself. While I did enjoy the treat of having maple apple crisp for lunch (and my husband enjoyed eating the rest of it), the oak leaf lunch was my favorite to make and eat. I find it very relaxing to cut fruit and vegetables into cute shapes with a cookie cutter. Also, the novelty of potatoes cut into shapes for a potato salad was enjoyable to eat.
Maple Leaf Bento Lunch

Oak Leaf Bento Lunch

Nuts: Cashews
Fruit: Apple slices in the shape of oak leaves with a sprinkle of cinnamon (I wanted to use my mini acorn cutter for this but I momentarily lost it)

Native American History Bento
My 9 year old nephew requested the theme of this bento. He is studying Native American history in school. He specifically requested that I make wampum using garlic bread. I made cheesy garlic bread to help the corn and beans stick to the bread. My 14 year old niece enjoyed following these directions to make the teepee and added her own flare by drawing on the details with food markers.
Container: EasyLunchBoxes
Arrowheads: Apple slices covered with cinnamon and a little bit of sugar
Feathers: Green pepper
Wampum Belt: French bread slice with some garlic powder, cheese, corn, and black beans – baked in oven until cheese was melted
Teepee: Cheese quesadilla with carrots to hold it up. We followed this tutorial by Rook No. 17.

Salad: Spinach and radish
Lunch Where the Buffalo Roam

Container: EasyLunchBoxes
Background: Flour quesadilla with Mexican blend cheese, painted blue with food coloring and water

Roald Dahl Day Bento Blog Hop
Welcome to our Roald Dahl Day Blog Hop. To continue on to the next blog, scroll down to the end of this post and click on the button.
When I found out that my Bento Bloggers and Friends planned to hold a Roald Dahl Bento Hop, my first thought was James and the Giant Peach. I have vivid memories of my 1st grade teacher reading the book to my class. I did not see the movie because I did not want anything to compete with my childhood memories of this story.
This lunch is very simple but it is how I would have drawn it as a child. It portrays the seagulls carrying the peach in the sky. You can imagine what is inside the peach. That was my favorite part as a child, thinking about James, Centipede, Miss Spider, Old-Green-Grasshopper, Ladybug, and Earthworm interacting inside a peach.
Container: EasyLunchBoxes
Peach & Seagulls: Seagulls (pie crust), strings (angel hair pasta), Peach (Pillsbury Thin Crust Pizza Dough – two circle pieces with tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese inside and baked. After baking I brushed on orange food coloring)
Vegetable: Zima tomatoes
Book & Fruit: Book (cheese quesadilla with food color marker text), yogurt covered raisins
Please click on the hop button below to see what Sarah of Blame it on the bento prepared.
DIY Miniatures Frames and Pie
My 11 year old niece and I had a delightful time creating miniatures. We scanned, re-sized, printed, and framed miniature photos of her Grandmother (my Mother).
For some of the photos we used Foil Embossed Stickers from the Dollar Tree. I thought they were $1.00 but when I checked out, the cashier said it was on sale for 1 penny! When I was fishing for a penny, a person behind me in line handed me a penny and said, “Pay it forward.” So it was free for me! We glued some photos on these stickers and glued light cardboard to the backs of these frames.
Foil Embossed Stickers
We took the photo off of this frame (see below) and put our own photo in the frame.
Purchased Dollhouse Frame
Customized Miniature Framed Photo
We also followed these directions and made miniature pies with bottle caps, beads, and felt.

Peach Salad: I loosely followed this Peach Salad with Tomatoes Feta and Basil Vinaigrette. I forgot to add the feta. I omitted the shallot, and used wine vinegar instead of the sherry vinegar.
Peach Yogurt: Wegmans Peach Yogurt with peach garnish
Peach Muffins: Peach Oatmeal Muffins (from Scaling Back) Since I used these muffins as a main course, I reduced the sugar to 1/8 cup in the topping and to 1/4 cup in the muffin. My husband said that next time I should add a little more sugar.

Pear Pizza Bento
I wanted to use up some local pears I received from a friend. I made the pear pizza and stuffed pears for dinner and it ended up being a perfect leftovers for lunch meal. The pizza toppings were ingredients I happened to have in the house. I loved it so much, that I will have to make it again sometime.

Crafty Birthday Gifts from Nieces
My nieces gave me amazing handmade gifts for my birthday this year.
I received this hand decorated pillowcase (see above and below). My 8 year old niece used fabric markers to decorate both sides of a pillowcase. I love it! I think that her little lambs are very cute. She also made a letter K for me. So special!
Other Side of Pillowcase
Handmade Letter K
My 11 year old niece made a lamb ornament for me. She did it all herself. She made the pattern, cut the felt, embroidered the eye, stuffed, and sewed it. I love it! She also made a special bookmark. She drew and stitched two sheep. She sewed one and left one for me to stitch. So cute!

Avocado Salad Shells Lunch
For a long time I loved the idea of making a vegetarian salad in a pasta shell. I finally made one. I don’t use avocados very often but I enjoy them. They are delicious in this filling meal.

Zucchini Bento

Container: EasyLunchBoxes
Zucchini Pie:Zucchini and Cheese Pie, lettuce leaf

Dessert: Chocolate Zucchini Cake – did not use this recipe but it was similar (no honey, and I sprinkled chocolate chips on top)
Moose Themed Pizza Dinner
My 11 year old niece flew by herself to her Grandparents (my parents) house for the first time. Of course I was there to make a moose themed pizza dinner in her honor.
The moose pizza had tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, and some moose had mushrooms. My niece requested shaped pizzas because she enjoys my tradition of making shaped pizzas for Christmas. I looked through my extensive cookie cutter collection and decided on my large moose cutter. I got this cutter a long time ago on a business trip to Minnesota (bought it at the Mall of America). This was my first time using it.
Moose Shaped Pizza
I used this recipe for the moose cookies. I used a plastic sandwich bag and cut off a small corner. Then I piped the outline of the moose. I used a basic butter and confectionery sugar frosting with some cocoa powder.
Moose Cookies
Spaghetti Lunch
I made this lunch for my teenage nephew as part of my Tips for Packing Food for Active Teenagers guest post for Diana Rambles. This one did not make the cut but my nephew enjoyed it. Vegetable: Cooked broccoli with melted cheddar
Spaghetti: Spaghetti with tomato sauce and Parmesan cheese
State Capital Lunch
When I found the States and Capitals Educational Snacks at Whole Foods, I knew that I had to make a state themed lunch. When I was a kid, I was the nerd with the state capital cards trying to teach the other kids in the neighborhood. I made this lunch for my 11 year old niece.

Mini Stuffed Animals
My 11 year old niece and I made these miniature stuffed animals. We used a large moose cookie cutter to make the pattern for the moose. My niece drew the pattern for the Teddy Bear. My niece stitched the eyes and mouth on the moose and Teddy. She used black seed beads for the Teddy’s eyes. We used fleece and a little poly-fill stuffing.

Continuing in my series of twice baked potato lunches, here is a football themed meal. I served this to my 16 year old nephew for lunch at home. It was his idea to make the goal post and field out of bell peppers. I love collaborating with my nephew. I think that it turned out great.
