Knight Bento

Knight Bento

When I made my first knight bento I knew that there would be other knight themed bentos in my future. My 8 year old nephew requested that I use the ECO Lunchbox because it is metal like armor. I don’t like using sanding sugar for healthy bentos but I made an exception for this lunch.

Container: ECO Lunchboxes

Background: Sugar snap peas

Nuts: Brazil nuts in small Wilton snack cup

Dip: Ranch

Knight Helmet: Peanut butter and strawberry jam sandwich on wheat bread with Wegmans Fruit Flat details, silver and red sanding sugar “glued” with a little bit of soft butter.

Fruit: Strawberries, one strawberry dipped in melted chocolate to represent a shield

Tissue Box Die

Tissue Box Die

When my 8 year old nephew and I spent the day together recently, we created a craft for JDaniel4’s Mom: 3rd Annual Tissue Box Challenge 2013. The challenge was to “decorate or build a tissue box(es) with or for your children”.

Our project is basic but it was a great Aunt/Nephew activity and it was fun to work together in my craft room. We brainstormed ideas. I drew the circles, he did most of the coloring. Together we attached the panels.

Hummus: Served in Mini Dippers

Archery Bento

Archery Bento

This was lunch for my 8 year old nephew on a day that we were out and about. It was packed in an insulated bag with an ice pack. I thought that the pretzel sticks would get soft but he said that they were alright.

Background: Orange bell pepper and sugar snap peas

Bow: Green bell pepper

Arrows: Pretzel sticks with Wegmans Fruit Flat details

Target: I mixed the colors with hot rice and packed into the circle cookie cutters then I carefully lifted out the metal rings. I started with the outer rings and worked inward. It was actually easier to make than I expected.

  • Yellow – turmeric

Grilled Cheese Sandwich Bento

Grilled Cheese Sandwich Bento

Today is Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day so I decided to make a bento with grilled cheese. I made this one for my Mom. She came up with the idea to use jam in the center. It brought back memories of my Grandfather. He always ate jam with his Grilled Cheese.

Container: ECO Lunchboxes

  • Grilled Cheese on wheat bread cut into flower shapes with homemade grape jam in center
  • Sugar snap peas
  • Spinach
  • Carrot flowers
  • Mango

Pig Bento

Pig Bento

This is my third lunch using the CuteZcute cutter. Previously I made the Panda and Frog. Sometime in the future I will make the cat. I asked my 8 year old nephew to help me brainstorm how to make this lunch. He suggested a pig in mud (chocolate pudding). I loved the idea but decided on a savory version of mud – black beans and rice.

Container: EasyLunchBoxes

Vegetable: Carrots with Greek yogurt and honey

Mini Pigs: Apple cut in pig shapes with cinnamon

Pig: I used the CuteZcute cutter to cut the pig out of a tortilla. I coated it with cooking spray, sprinkled with paprika and broiled. The CuteZcute cutter is available at Bento USA by All Things For Sale and on Amazon.

Mud: Black beans and rice. I loosely followed this recipe but included a higher bean to rice ratio to make it look more like mud. I used 1 can of black beans instead of red beans, and did not include the green bell pepper, stock, and cilantro.

Around the World Birthday Party

Pinatas

I hosted an Around the World birthday party for my husband’s birthday. I invited his family and friends. My husband picked the countries based on the food he wanted to eat. Our countries were: Mexico, Italy, and Thailand.

Decorations:

I made a Happy Birthday banner using Happy Birthday in Spanish, Italian, and Thai. I also included the country flag and earth. For the place settings I included something from each country – individual pinatas (Mexico), customized drink cups (Italy), and elephant napkin rings (Thailand).

Mexico section of Birthday Banner

Birthday-Banner

The pinatas were fun to make but VERY time consuming. We made 14 for the party. I wanted something different than candy so we filled the pinatas with individual packs of peanuts (10), and snack bags of pistachios (4). We put the trap door in the back of the pinata. These were a hit at the party!

Pinatas

Individual-Pinata

For the custom Salute cup, I used the country shape of Italy, put the words Salute on top and created one for each of the party participants.

Italy Cup

I used an applique pattern for the elephant, re-sized it to be smaller, and made a page to print out on card stock. I then cut them out and glued to paper for the ring. I left the trunk of the elephant not glued. I made napkin bundles that included plastic ware and used the napkin ring to hold it together. I sealed the ring with a piece of clear tape.

Vegetable Fruit and Quinoa Bento

Tomato Cucumber Quinoa

For this bento I used two recipes (Cucumber Feta Salad and Pine Nut Quinoa) from the Cooking with Trader Joe’s Cookbook: Easy Lunch Boxes by Kelly Lester. The Cucumber Feta Salad is on page 192. I basically followed the recipe but used large tomatoes instead of cherry or grape. I also omitted the parsley and did not put garlic in the dressing. The Pine Nut Quinoa recipe is on page 164. The only change I made to the recipe was I used Near East Quinoa Blend with Roasted Red Pepper & Basil. I had it in my pantry because I wanted to try it. I prefer regular quinoa.

The recipes were great and this meal was filling.

Pony Express Bento

Pony Express

This Day in History: On April 3, 1860 the Pony Express began. It was an American mail delivery service that used horses and young riders to deliver mail across rough terrain as fast as possible. It only lasted 18 months.

This lunch did not turn out as I had imagined. I think that the horse is the problem (and lack of a rider). My horse cookie cutter was not running, it was standing so I used a unicorn cutter and cut off the horn. But this lunch tasted delicious and it was fun to eat the cute apple slices.

Container: EasyLunchBoxes

Background: Celery sticks

Horse: Flatout Flatbread – Heritage Wheat (toasted), eye (dried blueberry), rough terrain (Trader Joe’s Veggie & Flaxseed Tortilla Chips)

Lettering: Carrot (glued on with some peanut butter)

Mini Horses: Apples

Hummus: Homemade with some paprika on top

Leftover Pierogi Bento

Leftover Pierogi Lunch

This bento lunch was very fast to make. It contains leftovers from our Easter dinner. I put the dairy in a silicon cup so it can be removed and the rest of the lunch heated in a microwave.

At my Dad’s request I made pierogi for Easter. I made cabbage and cream cheese, spinach and cheese, and fresh strawberry. When I posted about our Christmas Dumplings Around the World meal, a faithful reader and blogger provided many suggestions for making pierogi. I tried spinach and strawberry because of her. My family loved the strawberry pierogi and considered it a favorite. There were no strawberry pierogi left for this lunch.

Container: EasyLunchBoxes

Dairy & Fruit: Greek yogurt with a little leftover rhubarb strawberry filling from dessert crepes, strawberry as decoration

Vegetables: Spinach, Trader Joe’s garlic and herb goat cheese with Parmesan cheese (leftover pierogi filling), leftover asparagus with bread crumbs

Pierogi: Homemade pierogi, cabbage and cream cheese, spinach and cheese (leftovers)

Dyngus Day Bento

Dyngus Day Lunch

The first time I heard of Dyngus Day was when I moved to Western, NY state. Dyngus Day is a Polish-American holiday celebrated the day after Easter. Traditionally, men throw water on women and hit them with pussy willows. The next day women can do the same back. I don’t know if anyone actually does this but Buffalo, NY has a large Dyngus Day celebration with a parade and many events.

I thought it would be fun to make a Dyngus Day themed bento lunch and figure out ways to make pussy willows out of food. I ended up with sweet and savory edible pussy willows.

I bought pussy willows at Wegmans because I wanted to look at real ones while I worked on this bento. In the grocery store a man said to me, “You are Polish!”. I was a little confused at first because I am not Polish and wondered why this random man would think so. Then I remembered the pussy willows in my cart. I responded that my husband is Polish. The man asked if I knew what people did with the pussy willows. I said, “yes” and quickly moved on to do other shopping.

Container: Rubbermaid TakeAlong

Vegetables: Red bell pepper

Fruit: Apple and strawberries (in white Wilton cup)

Quilled Easter Eggs

Quilled Eggs Tree

Keeping with tradition, once again my niece (14 years) and I used a different technique to decorate eggs in blue and white for Easter. This year we quilled paper and glued it on the eggs with tacky glue. My niece painted the eggs blue this year. (We dyed them blue the other two years).

A few years ago, I gave my niece the Klutz Twirled Paper book for a birthday gift. She loves quilling. We decided to create quilled pieces for the eggs. It was my first time quilling so she taught me how to do it. We used some of the patterns and directions from this page by Chica and Jo.

Tea Party Trivia Game

Tea Trivia Game

I am part of a small women’s group. We get together at each others homes for some type of activity. Last month our get together was a tea party. The hostess did an amazing job with the food and table setting. I wish that I had taken photos.

When I asked what I could bring to the tea party, the hostess suggested a tea game. I enjoyed doing the research and making of this game. I created 22 trivia cards.

Disclaimer: I do not guarantee the accuracy of the trivia. I did not paraphrase every card. I included a link to the website where I found the information and/or the question.

4 Tea Trivia Cards

See the Tea Trivia Game if you want to use my cards. My printer does not handle card stock well. I found it easier to print separately and glue the cards together.

The trivia is not equal in difficulty. So there is an element of luck as well as knowledge for winning the game. But for our party, it was just fun to learn about tea. We were not competitive.

Tea Trivia Card

How to Make the Game:

  • Print out onto card stock the trivia cards and enough tea cup backs for each trivia card.
  • Cut out cards.
  • Use a small amount of glue to attach the trivia card and tea cup backs to each other and press together.
  • Place glued cards under a stack of heavy books to dry.
  • Gather an assortment of tea bags that are in individual packaging.
  • Place trivia cards and tea bags in a bag or box.

How to Play the Game:

  • Take turns asking each other the trivia questions.
  • If a person answers the question correctly, they can pick a tea bag.
  • The person with the highest number of tea bags at the end is the winner.

Vegetarian Irish Dinner

Brown Bread and Applesauce Cake

My Grandmother was born in Ireland. As an Irish-American I took step dancing classes as a child and my family had corned beef and cabbage St. Patrick’s day dinners. As a lifelong vegetarian, I ate Irish Soda Bread and potatoes and carrots cooked separate for me. This year I decided to cook a simple vegetarian Irish meal.

My Mom and I made Brown Bread, Colcannon, and Applesauce Cake with Whiskey Frosting. We also had Irish cheddar cheese. I was not entirely pleased with the Brown Bread and Colcannon so I will not post the recipes here. We enjoyed the Applesauce Cake and loved the whiskey frosting. The Applesauce Cake is dense and reminded me of an old-fashioned cake. I don’t like raisins so we used craisins instead but not the full amount.

We used my Great-Grandmother’s china for this meal.

Irish Heritage Card

Irish Heritage Card

For St. Patrick’s Day this year I made cards for my 2 nieces. Both cards are the same except for the recipients name. This one of course is Ella’s. I am not sure if the idea of a custom heritage card is unique. I refused to google it when I came up with the concept. I wanted my card to be original.

I can see many possibilities for heritage cards. This one shows emigration by ship from Ireland to the United States in 1936.

The family tree (far left of the card) shows the recipient at the bottom and each branch holds woman’s names. My card has the names of my niece’s Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Great-Great Grandmother, and Great-Great-Great Grandmother. I probably can go at least one more branch on the tree but I need to ask my relatives in Ireland and I did not have time to get an answer before I had to get this card in the mail.

Note: There is a lot of artistic freedom in the geography drawing on this card.

Update: My nieces are 8 and 10. After receiving these cards they had many questions about family history. I am glad that this card helped create a discussion about our family.

Sheep Embroidery Floss Organizer

Homemade Embroidery Floss Organizer

I was inspired by this and my love of playing with shrinky dinks to create this project. I used a sheet of white shrink film. I had it left over from an angel place card/ornament project my niece and I made several years ago.

This was an easy project with cute results.

Supplies:

  • 8 1/2 inch x 11 inch sheet of shrink film (plastic)
  • Permanent marker
  • Exacto knife or other craft knife
  • Scissors
  • Cookie sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Oven
  • Embroidery floss

Step 1: Use a permanent marker to draw your image and holes for embroidery floss on a piece of shrink film.

Step 2: Use an exacto or craft knife to cut-out holes for embroidery floss.

Sheep on full shrink plastic sheet

Step 3: Use scissors to cute around shape.

Organizer before baking

Step 4: Put shape to be shrunk on a cookie sheet between two pieces of parchment paper.

Covered wiht parchment

Step 5: Bake in a 335 degree oven for about 2 – 3 minutes. The shape will curl up and then become flat again. When the shape is flat, it is done. (Follow directions that come with shrink plastic)

Hinamatsuri Dinner Party

Girls Day Dinner Table

I had some young relatives and a neighbor over for a Hinamatsuri (Girl’s Day) themed dinner. Click here to find out more about this Japanese holiday. I made a vegetarian meal tailored for American kids to eat.

Music:

I played a CD of Koto Music of Japan (Zumi-Kai Original Instrumental Group).

Decorations:

I decorated my dining room for Hinamatsuri. I downloaded and created an inexpensive 5 tiered Hinamatsuri doll display.

Years ago my friend gave me a hanging decoration. I hung it from my chandelier above the dining room table.

  • Paper Hinamatsuri dolls on a tiered display – I printed these onto card stock, cut-out, and assembled.
  • Hanging decoration
  • Place card – I found these via Hiragana Mama. I printed onto card stock and colored with markers.

Craft:

I found simple crafts that reinforced the cultural symbols of Hinamatsuri. We made a lot of simple origami Emperors. The kids decorated some faces as crying, angry, and laughing faces. These are for the three habits represented on the 5th tier of the doll display.

Emperor Origami

Girls Day Origami

Food:

I planned the meal around a tiered rice cake that I wanted to recreate. Many years ago my friend gave me a set of cute cooking cards. I recreated a similar looking rice cake using different ingredients. See below for instructions.

  • Hinamatsuri Salad – I used the holiday colors of green, white, and pink. I was inspired by this and this. My salad includes lettuce, carrot, radish, cucumber, snow peas, and pink grapefruit.
  • Hinamatsuri Rice Cake – I copied the Ohinasama Sushi image from ‘with Cooking Cards’. ISBN4-06-187736-4. See below for directions.
  • Hinamatsuri Fruit Kabobs – I used green melon, apple, and strawberries cut into flower shapes. I printed this image to make picks for the kabobs.
  • Yogurt Fruit Dip – I added cinnamon and honey to plain Greek yogurt.
  • Strawberry Pokey – I purchased from Wegmans grocery store.
  • Peach Tea – I made iced tea with herbal peach tea bags.
  • Ramune Japanese soda (with marble) – I purchased from Wegmans grocery store.
  • Hinamatsuri Pudding – I made and layered pistachio pudding, whipped cream, and vanilla pudding (with some red food coloring).
  • Strawberry Cream Cake Roll

Hinamatsuri Salad

Hinamatsuri Salad

Hinamatsuri Rice Cake

Hinamatsuri Rice

Slice of Hinamatsuri Rice Cake

Slice of Girls Day Rice

How to make the Hinamatsuri Rice Cake

Rice: Use an 8 inch springform pan. Spray the inside of the springform pan with cooking spray. Cook 1 cup of raw Nishiki rice for each layer. (I used my Vegetable/Rice steamer). Green bottom layer – add some cooked food processed spinach to the hot rice until it turns the color you want. Pack the green layer into the bottom of the springform pan. White middle layer – pack the white layer on top of the green rice layer. Pink top layer – add some red food coloring to the water when cooking rice. Press the pink rice on top of the white rice later. Remove the outside of the spring form pan.

Emperor and Empress: Body – Make a triangular shaped rice ball (onigiri). Shape rice with your hand or a mold like this. Clothing – make some crepes. (my crepes were thin so I needed two for each body). Inner clothing – cut thin cucumber slices for Emperor, cut thin carrot slices for Empress. Put cucumber or carrot slices on top of the onigiri. Place onigiri in the center of the crepe and fold. Use a kitchen scissors to cut away excess crepe. Emperor’s baton – trim a piece of broccoli. Empress’s Fan – slice radish and cut ridges for fan. Belt – cut a piece of dried seaweed (Nori) with kitchen scissors. Place baton (f0r Emperor) and fan (for Empress) on top of onigiri but under nori. Press belt into crepe. Use some water if necessary to help the nori stick to the crepe. Head – Peel radishes and attach to bodies with a toothpick. Hair – cook some pieces of raw spinach a few seconds in the microwave until limp. Place spinach on top of radish heads to look like hair. Squeeze a few pieces together to form the Emperor’s topknot.

Decoration: Gently push three snow peas into the rice. Thinly slice radish and place two radish slices in front of the snow peas. Decorate around the top of the rice cake with an edible herb such as thyme (pictured).

Will March Come in Like a Lamb or Lion?

March Come in as Lamb or Lion?

This was the second time I created a March lamb or lion bento. The first one was this bento I made last year. As the name of my blog may tell you, I like lambs. This was my first time making tortilla roll-ups. They look a little messy but tasted delicious.

Container: EasyLunchBoxes

Main: Peanut butter and homemade apricot jam tortilla roll-ups, sugar snap peas, lamb and lion faces (natural and orange cheddar cheese with food coloring details), lamb and lion picks

Fruit: Mandarins from Trader Joes

Lions & Lambs: Shortbread Zoo Cookies

Cupcake Bento

Cupcake Themed Lunch

These silicone flower cups were also in the package from veggie bento love. I was inspired by the cute cups to create this cupcake themed bento. If you want your macaroni and cheese heated, you can remove the cupcake from this bento container and heat in the microwave.

Container: Take-out container I picked up somewhere

Pink Flower Cup: Apple rings and raspberries (I put some orange juice on the apple rings to prevent browning)

Purple Flower Cup: Macaroni and Cheese Cupcake (I followed this recipe except I did not use chives)

Green Flower Cup: Cucumber and cherry tomatoes (tomatoes are held together with a flower pick)

Also in Container: Mini cupcake and sugar snap peas

Shark Bento

Shark Lunch

Awhile ago a friend gave me the idea of making a shark themed lunch. My 8 year old nephew is visiting today so it seemed like a perfect time to make a shark bento. It was very easy to make. The only thing that took some time was cooking rice. If I had frozen rice in my freezer this would have been very fast to make. I experimented with using frozen fruit (blueberries and blackberries) to dye the rice. The winner for this bento was the blueberry rice. Yes it is purple but I liked using a natural dye for the rice.

Container: EasyLunchBoxes

Ocean: Blueberry rice

Shells: Walnuts

Shark: Wheat peanut butter and strawberry jelly sandwich, eye (dried blueberry)

Sharks and Fish: Sharkies Organic Fruit Chews and Pepperidge Farm Goldfish baby

Fruit: Green grapes

Buchanan Log Cabin Bento

Buchanan Log Cabin Lunch

The theme this week at the Bento Blog Network is Politicians. I decided to do a bento for United States President James Buchanan. He was one of seven presidents thought to be born in a log cabin (Andrew Jackson, Zachary Taylor, Millard Fillmore, James Buchanan, Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, and James Abram Garfield).

Some other facts about Buchanan:

  • 15th President
  • In office between Franklin Pierce and Abraham Lincoln
  • Consistent ranking by historians as one of the worst Presidents

Container: EasyLunchBoxes

Background: Romaine lettuce

Sandwich: Wheat Peanut Butter sandwich, chimney and door (wheat thin), doorknob (dried blueberry), windows (mini Triscuits), roof outline (Wegmans Strawberry fruit flat), log ends (crust), number 15 (carrot)

Vegetable: Baby carrots

Fruit: Green grapes

Cheese: Buchanan portrait on cheddar cheese

Stitched Valentine’s Day Cards

Stitched Valentine's Day Cards

I stitched these simple cards for Valentine’s Day this year. There is something very satisfying about stitching on paper. I prefer fabric but I can see myself making more paper stitched cards in the future.

Basically I followed this tutorial for stitching on paper but I did not tape my template on the card (I carefully held it on while punching with a pushpin).

For my first card (not pictured) I drew hearts freehand. I thought that I would like the slightly off, homemade look. I did not like it. For the two cards pictured above I used cookie cutters. I have a huge supply of Valentine’s Day cookie cutters. My lips cutter did not make the photo. I have a broken cupid (see photo below).

Pretzel Heart Bento

Pretzel Heart Bento

This lunch has a lot of orange and did not turn out like I imagined but it tasted great. It was my first time filling homemade pretzels with cheese. I tried goat cheese and cheddar. I preferred the cheddar pretzels. The pretzel in this lunch is the only one that had some of the cheese escape. I liked the way it looked.

Container: EasyLunchBoxes

Background: Romaine lettuce

Fruit: Orange segments

Vegetable: Baby carrots

Pretzels: Homemade soft pretzels stuffed with cheddar cheese, Mini Dippers containing tomato sauce for dipping, granola bar

Pasta with Heart Beets Bento

Pasta with Beet Hearts

This was a quick lunch to make and it could easily be made from dinner leftovers. If you want to heat the pasta in a microwave, you could use different sides or take them out. Usually I cook my own beets but this time I bought Melissa’s Peeled Baby Red Beets. There were no additives but they were very sweet!

Note: Usually when I make this dish I serve the beets separate because I don’t like my pasta to turn pink. I put the beets on top for a Valentine’s themed garnish.

Container: EasyLunchBoxes

Pasta: Mezze Penne with blue cheese, a little bit of butter, and beets cut into heart shapes

Dessert: Red grapes and Heart Shaped York Peppermint Patty

Vegetable: Cherry tomatoes
