Nest Themed Dinner

Nest Dinner Header

My 16 year old nephew and 14 year old niece came over for a nest themed dinner. It was enjoyable to have them help me cook and the food was delicious.

Menu

  • Salad with bird crouton. I mostly followed this recipe from Lady Nann’s Table. The eggs and rest of the salad are from the Bird’s Nest Salad with Citrus Dressing recipe from Beautiful on the Raw. I only made orange eggs and did not put garlic in the dressing. We also used the olive oil choice in the dressing instead of nut butter.
  • Potato nests from Eating Whole. They took a lot longer to cook than the recipe said but I think that I had more potatoes in each cup. We roasted red pepper, white onion and zucchini to add to the nests.
  • Birds Nest Pasta from Veggie Kids. My niece had hers with peas since she does not like cheese. My nephew and I had our nests with pearl fresh mozzarella balls.
  • Birds Nest Cookies from Martha Stewart. They take time to make but are worth it! I used Cadbury Mini Eggs (milk chocolate with a crisp sugar shell). I bought the eggs around Easter.

Around the World Birthday Party

Pinatas

I hosted an Around the World birthday party for my husband’s birthday. I invited his family and friends. My husband picked the countries based on the food he wanted to eat. Our countries were: Mexico, Italy, and Thailand.

Decorations:

I made a Happy Birthday banner using Happy Birthday in Spanish, Italian, and Thai. I also included the country flag and earth. For the place settings I included something from each country – individual pinatas (Mexico), customized drink cups (Italy), and elephant napkin rings (Thailand).

Mexico section of Birthday Banner

The pinatas were fun to make but VERY time consuming. We made 14 for the party. I wanted something different than candy so we filled the pinatas with individual packs of peanuts (10), and snack bags of pistachios (4). We put the trap door in the back of the pinata. These were a hit at the party!

For the custom Salute cup, I used the country shape of Italy, put the words Salute on top and created one for each of the party participants.

Italy Cup

I used an applique pattern for the elephant, re-sized it to be smaller, and made a page to print out on card stock. I then cut them out and glued to paper for the ring. I left the trunk of the elephant not glued. I made napkin bundles that included plastic ware and used the napkin ring to hold it together. I sealed the ring with a piece of clear tape.

Hinamatsuri Dinner Party

Girls Day Dinner Table

I had some young relatives and a neighbor over for a Hinamatsuri (Girl’s Day) themed dinner. Click here to find out more about this Japanese holiday. I made a vegetarian meal tailored for American kids to eat.

Music:

I played a CD of Koto Music of Japan (Zumi-Kai Original Instrumental Group).

Decorations:

I decorated my dining room for Hinamatsuri. I downloaded and created an inexpensive 5 tiered Hinamatsuri doll display.

Years ago my friend gave me a hanging decoration. I hung it from my chandelier above the dining room table.

  • Paper Hinamatsuri dolls on a tiered display – I printed these onto card stock, cut-out, and assembled.
  • Hanging decoration
  • Place card – I found these via Hiragana Mama. I printed onto card stock and colored with markers.

Craft:

I found simple crafts that reinforced the cultural symbols of Hinamatsuri. We made a lot of simple origami Emperors. The kids decorated some faces as crying, angry, and laughing faces. These are for the three habits represented on the 5th tier of the doll display.

Food:

I planned the meal around a tiered rice cake that I wanted to recreate. Many years ago my friend gave me a set of cute cooking cards. I recreated a similar looking rice cake using different ingredients. See below for instructions.

  • Hinamatsuri Salad – I used the holiday colors of green, white, and pink. I was inspired by this and this. My salad includes lettuce, carrot, radish, cucumber, snow peas, and pink grapefruit.
  • Hinamatsuri Rice Cake – I copied the Ohinasama Sushi image from ‘with Cooking Cards’. ISBN4-06-187736-4. See below for directions.
  • Hinamatsuri Fruit Kabobs – I used green melon, apple, and strawberries cut into flower shapes. I printed this image to make picks for the kabobs.
  • Yogurt Fruit Dip – I added cinnamon and honey to plain Greek yogurt.
  • Strawberry Pokey – I purchased from Wegmans grocery store.
  • Peach Tea – I made iced tea with herbal peach tea bags.
  • Ramune Japanese soda (with marble) – I purchased from Wegmans grocery store.
  • Hinamatsuri Pudding – I made and layered pistachio pudding, whipped cream, and vanilla pudding (with some red food coloring).
  • Strawberry Cream Cake Roll

How to make the Hinamatsuri Rice Cake

Rice: Use an 8 inch springform pan. Spray the inside of the springform pan with cooking spray. Cook 1 cup of raw Nishiki rice for each layer. (I used my Vegetable/Rice steamer). Green bottom layer – add some cooked food processed spinach to the hot rice until it turns the color you want. Pack the green layer into the bottom of the springform pan. White middle layer – pack the white layer on top of the green rice layer. Pink top layer – add some red food coloring to the water when cooking rice. Press the pink rice on top of the white rice later. Remove the outside of the spring form pan.

Emperor and Empress: Body – Make a triangular shaped rice ball (onigiri). Shape rice with your hand or a mold like this. Clothing – make some crepes. (my crepes were thin so I needed two for each body). Inner clothing – cut thin cucumber slices for Emperor, cut thin carrot slices for Empress. Put cucumber or carrot slices on top of the onigiri. Place onigiri in the center of the crepe and fold. Use a kitchen scissors to cut away excess crepe. Emperor’s baton – trim a piece of broccoli. Empress’s Fan – slice radish and cut ridges for fan. Belt - cut a piece of dried seaweed (Nori) with kitchen scissors. Place baton (f0r Emperor) and fan (for Empress) on top of onigiri but under nori. Press belt into crepe. Use some water if necessary to help the nori stick to the crepe. Head – Peel radishes and attach to bodies with a toothpick. Hair – cook some pieces of raw spinach a few seconds in the microwave until limp. Place spinach on top of radish heads to look like hair. Squeeze a few pieces together to form the Emperor’s topknot.

Decoration: Gently push three snow peas into the rice. Thinly slice radish and place two radish slices in front of the snow peas. Decorate around the top of the rice cake with an edible herb such as thyme (pictured).

Small Plates Appetizer Dinner

Small-Plate-Appetizer-Dinner-W

I am finally getting around to posting this amazing meal. For Christmas Eve dinner my family enjoyed a small plates appetizer dinner. My Mom and I decided on the recipes and coordinated the plates/shooters/bowls we wanted to use.

Yes we used a lot of plates but it was fun for a special occasion.

My family does a great job at pitching in and creating meals together. I cherish the time we spend together cooking and feasting.

Caprese Salad and Stuffed Baquette

Caprese-Salad-Stuffed-Baquette-W

For the miniature Caprese salads we were inspired by this recipe (scroll down) but did not really use it as we have made Caprese salad many times. My husband made the salads for this meal.

We used this recipe for the stuffed baguette but did two versions, one with olives and one without (my husband does not like olives). My Mom made this recipe.

Dad’s Stuffed Mushrooms

Mushrooms-W

My Dad made his famous stuffed  mushrooms. They are always a hit at parties. Too bad that I don’t like mushrooms.

Baked Spinach Dip in Bread Bowl

Baked-Spinach-Bread-Bowl-W

We used this recipe for these delicious morsels. My Mom made these.

Pesto Poppers

I made these Pesto Poppers. They were very easy to assemble.

Pumpkin Soup Shooters

I made these Pumpkin soup shooters. I used vegetable stock.

Mango, Carrot, and Cucumber Sticks

Dumplings Around the World

Menu-Dumplings-Around-World

On Christmas day my family feasted on dumplings from around the world. I came up with this idea because I wanted something fun and unusual for 5 adults celebrating Christmas day together. Each course was served 1 to 2 hours apart. I made menu cards for each person (pictured above). My husband came up with the idea of clinking glasses and wishing Merry Christmas in the language from each country. It was a lot of fun especially when he said, “Once more with feeling!”. For all of the people who wonder what vegetarians eat, take a look at this feast.

Note: If I did this again, I will plan beverages for each course. It could be fun to pair drinks from each country with each dumpling.

Gyoza

Gyoza

I made ahead and froze my own version of vegetarian gyoza. It was easy to pan fry them before serving. I used this dipping sauce but did not use the chili and reduced the amount of green onion.

Pierogi

Piergoi

We made Martha Stewart’s cabbage pierogi recipe (not the full recipe). We prepared them the day before and fried in butter before serving. We typically make them around Christmas each year. This year we served them with sour cream, apple sauce, and mustard.

Samosa

Samosa

We used this recipe from Willams-Sonoma. We made mango chutney (1/2 the recipe) and raita to serve with the samosas.

Calzone

Calzone

I made mini calzones with goat cheese and herb filling. We served with store bought fresh marinara sauce.

Apple Dumpling

Apple-Dumpling

We used this recipe for the apples and caramel sauce. We used leftover puffed pastry instead of the dumpling dough to make it easier at the end of a day of cooking and feasting.

Christmas Appetizer Party

HolidayPartyTable

I helped my parents host a Christmas themed party for their neighbors. We served hot and cold appetizers. Our guests brought desserts. It was a fun party to host.

Special Touches:

  • Candy Cane vase with flowers (My Mom was inspired by this)
  • Candy Cane place card holders (I used a Martha Stewart holly paper punch)
  • Homemade ice bowl with flowers and dill

Jack O’ Lantern Themed Dinner

My family and I prepared and enjoyed a jack o’ lantern themed meal. Each course had a jack o’ lantern face and all but one course had pumpkin.

Appetizer: Pumpkin cheese ball with crackers, carrots, and sugar snap peas

I did not use a recipe for this. I took 4 oz of cream cheese and added some herbs, black pepper and some shredded sharp cheddar. I put the mixture in a piece of plastic wrap and used my hands to form a pumpkin shape. Then, I attached more shredded cheese to the outside of the pumpkin shape. My Mom decorated it with a sugar snap pea, black olives, and carrot.

Main: Potato-onion blintzes and roasted pumpkin with cinnamon

For the potato blintzes I mostly used the recipe from Sunset Menus & Recipes for Vegetarian Cooking 1981 page 56. But you can use any savory crepe recipe and filling. Our filling includes sauteed onions, homemade mashed potatoes, sharp cheddar cheese, salt, and pepper. We decorated with sour cream and roasted pumpkin seeds.

Dessert: No-Bake Pumpkin Cheesecake with dark chocolate features, puffed pastry with Ben and Jerry’s pumpkin cheesecake ice cream

We used individual graham cracker shells for the no-bake pumpkin cheesecake. The faces were made with melted dark chocolate piped on parchment paper. We let them set in the refrigerator. I cut pumpkin shapes out of puffed pastry, scored with a knife (did not go deep enough), then sprinkled with pumpkin pie spice before baking. The pumpkin cheesecake ice cream went great with the puffed pastry.

Japanese Themed Birthday Party

My niece had a Japanese themed birthday party for her 14th birthday party with family. The focus of the theme was nature (crane, maple leaf, cherry blossom, and bamboo). We planned an Americanized version of Japanese food because many of the party attendees are not adventurous eaters. The guests enjoyed the theme and food.

Decorations:

  • Birthday banner in Japanese
  • Cherry blossom branches
  • Origami cranes
  • Pictures of Japanese nature
  • Chopstick rests – We modified this idea. Instead of scrap booking rub-ons I printed out clip-art (maple leaf, cherry blossom and bamboo) and then used Mod Podge.
  • Origami Nature Centerpieces – We used origami paper and folded bamboo, maple leaf and standing crane. We cut out a cherry blossom shape. I made labels for each nature in Japanese and taped to each cup.We attached the nature item on a stick to the top of a cup.

Dance Themed Slumber Party

I enjoyed helping with a dance themed slumber party for a 13th birthday.

Wild West – Gold Rush Party

Two of my nephews (in one family) have birthdays a few days apart so they have a combined birthday party with family.

The theme this year for their 8th and 12th birthdays was Wild West / Gold Rush.

My niece painted signs on cardboard which looked great!  They had signs with their family name and population, Shooting Range, Chuck Wagon, and Muddy Waters (gold panning pool).

Sign painted on cardboard to look like wood

We set up a shooting range using the paper target idea from Apple Falls. The target on the wooden barrel are tin cans balanced on a thin board.

Cans target practice

Another activity that was a HIT was panning for gold. It was a warm day and many party attendants enjoyed playing in the water searching for gold.

Pool filled with sand, water, and gold (spray painted rocks)

Results from panning for gold

When we had a family planning meeting for this party, my younger nephew came up with the idea for a Wanted poster with his Uncle on it. I found an old photo of the Uncle that I thought fit with the theme. My 15 year old nephew designed the poster.

Wanted Poster

I created this TNT candy favor using these directions from Allie Makes via  Jean’s Crafty Corner. I made a few changes. Instead of Rolos and white rope, I used SweeTARTS and white chenille pipe cleaners. I already had the wooden box.

For dessert we had a nice selection of delicious sweets.

  • Gold Rock Candy – I followed these directions but I lightly sprayed the yellow rock candy
  • Pick axe cake with gold nugget cupcakes
  • Banana Split ice cream dessert with lasso’s and star decorations
  • Chocolate cupcakes with peanut butter centers decorated with sprinkle sugar stars
  • Caramel popcorn in muslin bags

Dessert Table

The inspiration for the gold bags was this from One Charming Party. In order to keep down costs we decided not to do an iron-on label because we needed to make a lot of bags. My sister-in-law and niece sewed the bags out of muslin. They created a bag template to fit a plastic zip-lock bag. My sister-in-law hand painted the labels on the bags. They tied the bags with jute string.

Transportation Birthday Party

My sister-in-law held her son’s 4th birthday at her parent’s farm. The invitation for this party mentioned trains, cars, tractors, and trucks. This was a family party with about half adults and half young cousins in attendance.

My contributions to this party:

Watermelon: I used these directions from the National Watermelon Promotion Board.I decided to make the numbers out of card stock instead of watermelon. I was a little nervous since it was my first watermelon I carved. But I have plenty of pumpkin carving experience and I have carving tools so this was easy.

Race car watermelon

Train: I used this idea (scroll down) from ID Mommy. I changed the engine and added numbers. I could not find black card stock so I used a combination of construction paper and card stock. Since my nephew was celebrating his 4th birthday I created four cars and numbered them. We filled the train with cheese, crackers, trail mix, and pretzels.

Engine and first car of snack train

Entire train (before it was filled)

Tractor: My husband came up with the concept and created this vegetable tray tractor. We forgot to take a photo of the finished tractor. The dip container was in refrigerator when I took photo. We put the cherry tomatoes around the dip container to serve as the wagon.

Green Fendt vegetable tractor

Noodle Race track: I found the directions for the track here at My Little Gems. We just balanced the tracks on a chair. The kids enjoyed playing with this! I decided to keep the tracks separate to allow for flexibility of play. It was a cheap and easy party activity.

Card Games Birthday

I helped my sister-in-law with my nephews 10th birthday party. They have family birthday parties with a mix of adults (Aunts, Uncles, Grandparents) and children (siblings and cousins).  My nephew enjoys playing card games so this was the perfect theme. My sister-in-law did a great job with creating food in the black/red/white theme. My niece and nephews helped with the decorations.

Click on the photos to enlarge.

Decorations

  • Garlands: my nephew punched holes in the cards and we strung them
  • Centerpieces: Card cubes with card game set-ups. We used these wonderful directions. The birthday boy set-up the card games and I took photos. We created set-ups for Cribbage, Euchre, Go Fish, Poker, Rummy, Sequence, Solitaire, and Tripoley. Then I printed out two sets for each type and taped them to bamboo skewers. We stood them up in balls of clay.
  • Tablecloths: black and red
  • Plates: black and red
